The 2012 European Men's Football Championship (UEFA Euro 2012, also Euro 2012 for short) took place from 8 June to 1 July 2012 in Ukraine and Poland. It was the 14th edition of the UEFA European Men's Football Championship and the third time that the tournament has been hosted by two countries.
The joint candidacy of Ukraine and Poland was awarded to the tournament by the European Football Association UEFA on April 18, 2007, after Italy and Hungary-Croatia dropped out in the final round in Cardiff, Wales. Out of 53 UEFA members, the two host countries were automatically qualified for the final tournament. The 51 other countries had to try to qualify for the remaining 14 places through a qualifying process that started in August 2010 and ended in November 2011. It was the last European Championship with 16 teams: from 2016, 24 countries will participate in the final round. The proposal to expand the field of participants to 24 in 2012 was rejected.
The sixteen countries participating in the final tournament were divided into four groups of four teams, after which the numbers 1 and 2 of each group advanced to the knockout phase, which was organized according to a direct elimination system. The final was played in the NSK Olimpiejsky stadium in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. Spain won the tournament by beating Italy 4 - 0 in the final.
