Sheffield Wednesday is an English football club, founded on Wednesday 4 September 1867 and playing in the Football League Championship.
The club was originally founded in 1820 as a cricket club under the name of The Wednesday Cricket Club (the name Wednesday goes back to the fact that the cricket club members were free from work and other obligations on Wednesdays), while football served to to keep the players together in the winter months, and as a kind of training. However, the football team was much more successful than the cricket team: as early as 1882 the two teams were separated and in 1925 the cricket team was even disbanded.
On April 22, 1887, the club turned professional after some of the best players threatened to leave. In 1889 their application to join the Football League was declined, but they were admitted in 1892.
