Sporting Deportiva Aucas is a professional football club from Quito, Ecuador.
Aucas was founded by the oil company Royal Dutch Shell, which extracts oil in the interior of Ecuador. The oil company had had its own team for some time, but on February 5, 1945, it was decided to form Sporting Deportiva Aucas. The name Aucas is derived from the Indian tribe of the same name, also known as the Huaorani. The club colors red and yellow refer to the colors of Royal Dutch Shell.
In the first years of its existence, Aucas managed to win several prizes at regional and national level, but since the national competition was introduced in 1957, the club has not won a prize. In 2004, the club made headlines by signing Colombian goalkeeper René Higuita, after he had been out of action for a while due to a suspension for drug use. A year later, Higuita was fired again after he was caught again using doping.
In 2006, Aucas was relegated to Serie B of the Ecuadorian league. Promotion followed a few years later, after which Aucas became champion of Serie A for the first time in its existence in 2022.
