FC Schalke 04 (short S04) is a professional German football club from the Schalke district of Gelsenkirchen. The club had its most successful period during the 1930s.

In addition to football, Schalke 04 is also an association for basketball, handball, table tennis, athletics and e-sports. These sports clubs are located in the Schalke district. With approximately 158,000 members (as of 1 July 2019), the club behind Bayern Munich is the second largest sports association in Germany.

Schalke 04's arch-rival is Borussia Dortmund. This Kohlenpott derby is the largest and most loaded derby in Germany. However, the Kohlenpott derby has not been played since the 2021/22 season after Schalke 04 was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga in the 2020/21 season.
