Sampaio Corrêa FC is a Brazilian football club from São Luís in the state of Maranhão.
The club was founded in 1923 and was named after a seaplane that visited the city in 1922. In 1926, the club played in the highest division of the state league for the first time. Since 1930, the club has played continuously in this competition, which they won for the first time in 1933. It was not until 1959 with the Taça Brasil that a national competition was introduced for state champions to determine a national champion. After the state title in 1961, the club was allowed to enter the Taça in 1962, but immediately lost to Paysandu. The following year, the club was allowed to participate again and was now eliminated by Ríver. In 1965 the club was able to push through for the first time after they eliminated Flamengo-PI. In the second round they were defeated by Remo. At the last participation in 1966 they were defeated by the same Flamengo as the previous year.
In 1971 the Série A was introduced as the highest class, but there was initially no place for the clubs from the smaller states. The club did participate in the Série B. In 1972 the club reached the final for the title and won it after Campinense on penalties. In 1974 the club was allowed to participate in the Série A for the first time. In total, the club played eight times in the Série An, but could never break any pots. After all state champions were no longer allowed to participate in the Série A, in the mid-1980s, the club no longer managed to play in this. Despite a 9th place out of 64 clubs in the 1991 Série B, the club had to start in 1992 in the newly introduced Série C. In 1997 the club became champion there and thus promoted back to the Série B. In 1998 the club won the Copa Norte against São Raimundo and thus qualified for the international Copa CONMEBOL 1998. After the club had defeated América de Natal, they also switched the Colombian Deportes Quindío out. In the semi-finals they could not first draw against Santos, but in the return match they went down 5-1.
After five seasons of Série b, the club was relegated again in 2002. In 2005 and 2006, the club did not even play national football. In 2009, the Série D was introduced as the fourth class, so that the Série C was no longer the lowest national class. The club was relegated that year. They became champions three times in a row in the state competition, which ensured their participation in the Série D and in 2012 they won the title. After a second place in the Série C in 2013, the club was actually promoted back to the Série B and finished in the top ten for two seasons in a row.
In 2016, the club was relegated, but was able to return after one season, but the club could not guarantee its retention either. Earlier that year, the club did win the Copa do Nordeste against Bahia. The club was promoted again in 2019.
