Rangers Football Club is a football club from Glasgow, Scotland, which plays in the Scottish Premiership, the highest level of Scottish football. Their home ground, Ibrox Stadium, is located in the southwest of the city. The club is often informally referred to as Glasgow Rangers, although this has never been the official name.
Rangers was founded in March 1872. After the 2011-2012 season, the company behind Rangers was liquidated. The club was one of the original 11 members of the Scottish Football League before this liquidation. They were continuously active at the highest level until the liquidation of the company The Rangers Football Club PLC (the owners of Rangers at the time). With a newly founded company behind the club, they gained entry to the fourth tier of Scottish football the following season. The club was then promoted three times in four years, in order to return to the highest level.
Rangers have won more titles than any other club in the world, winning the Scottish Premiership 55 times, the Scottish Cup 33 times and the Scottish League Cup 27 times. Seven times, all three titles were won in the same season.
Rangers were the first British club to reach a final of a tournament organized by UEFA (the 1961 European Cup II) and, after being a finalist in 1961 and 1967, did win the European Cup II in 1972. Dynamo Moscow was defeated 3–2. In 2008, Rangers reached a European final for the fourth time, this time in the UEFA Cup, but lost 0–2 to Zenit St Petersburg. About 200,000 fans had traveled with the team to Manchester, where the final took place.
Rangers have a fierce rivalry with Celtic; the derby between the two clubs is known as the Old Firm.
