Olympique Nîmes was founded in 1937, two years later the highest division was reached, during the war the club played in the highest division (although those results are not official). In 1950, the club returned to the First Division again for a period of 17 seasons. From 1958 to 1960, the club became vice-champion three times in a row, in 1967 the club was relegated but returned to the First Division after just one season and became vice-champion again. In 1981 the club went back to the second division and the fat years were over. For the 1983/84 season, the club could return one more time, but then it took seven years before Nîmes brought first-class football again.
On February 15, 1989, the team moved to the Stade des Costières de Nîmes, the stadium's standard capacity is 18,482 spectators, but it has already been more. In the 1991/92 season, a record number of spectators was counted in a match against Olympique Marseille (25,051).
After the relegation from first in 1993, the club could not return to Ligue 1. In the first season in Ligue 2, the club finished fourth and just missed promotion, the following season the club became last. In 1997, the club returned to Ligue 2 for a five-season stay. In 2008 the club was promoted again. All season it looked as if the club would be immediately relegated, but after a victory on the last day of play against Stade Brestois, the club was able to secure their retention. In the 2009/10 season the club did a lot better and even had a chance of promotion for a long time. In the end, Nîmes finished in 10th place. The following season, Nîmes finished in penultimate place, relegating to the Championnat National. In 2011-2012 Nîmes was promoted again and the following season finished in a creditable 8th place. After a number of places in the middle bracket, the club finished sixth in 2017 and became vice champion in 2018, making their appearance in the highest division after 25 years.
They finished ninth in their first season. Things went less smoothly in 2019/20 and from the 13th to the 15th match day, the club was last. Due to the corona crisis, the season was stopped ten matchdays before the end, Nîmes was at that time eighteenth, and under normal circumstances this place would have to play a jump-off against a second division team to keep it, but the association decided to have only two clubs relegated and not to play a jump-off which saved the club. A year later, the club was relegated to Ligue 2 after finishing in nineteenth place.
