Newcastle United - aka The Magpies - was founded in 1881 as Stanley football club. In 1882 this name was changed to Newcastle East End and in 1892 to Newcastle United. That same year the club moved to St. James' Park, located in Newcastle upon Tyne. The club plays in a black and white striped uniform, which, according to supporters, brings luck. The nickname Magpies (magpies) also refers to the black and white colors (a magpie is also black and white). Supporters of the club are also called Geordies.
Newcastle United has developed a rivalry with nearby Sunderland. The Tyne-Wear derby between Newcastle United and Sunderland has been played since 1898. The club's other rivals are Manchester United, Middlesbrough and Liverpool. Newcastle's supporters call themselves The Toon Army.
