The Luxembourg football team played its first international match in 1911, losing 1-4 to France. Just before the First World War in 1914, the first victory was recorded, 5-4 against France. Luxembourg participated in four Olympic tournaments between 1920 and 1936 and was always eliminated in the first round. In 1948 and 1952 Luxembourg always reached the second round, but was then eliminated by Yugoslavia and Brazil respectively.
Luxembourg participated for the first time in qualifying competitions for the World Cup in 1934. From 1934 to 1958, 14 games were played, they were all lost with the goal numbers 12 for and 68 against. For the World Cup in 1962 the biggest loss was suffered (0-9 at home against England), but Portugal also won 4-2, a match in which the debuting Portuguese Eusébio immediately scored his first goal and Ady Schmit scored three goals. Luxembourg stunted qualifying for the 1964 European Championship, in the first round it was free and the Netherlands waited in the eighth final, both games were played in the Netherlands. In Amsterdam it became 1-1, in Rotterdam there was won 1-2 by two goals from Camille Dimmer. Luxembourg was also close to a stunt in the quarterfinals, two draws were played against Denmark, and 1-0 was lost in Amsterdam in the decision game.
This striking EC success was only an incident, in the remaining 18 qualifying matches in the 1960s, a draw was played against Poland once. In the 70s, Luxembourg registered one win (2-0 against Turkey) and twice a draw against Yugoslavia and Sweden, the remaining 27 games were lost. The biggest defeats were suffered against the Netherlands (8-0) and Hungary (8-1). In the 1980s the results were even worse, in 40 games only a draw was played twice against Scotland and Belgium. For the European Championship of 1984, another 9-0 defeat to England was suffered. For the 1996 European Championship, Luxembourg did not finish in last place for the first time in its group, Malta won twice. The most remarkable victory was a 1-0 win over the Czech Republic, Guy Hellers playing for Standard Liège scored the winning goal. The Czech Republic would later reach the final of the European Championship.
In the following four qualifying series there were only defeats, low were two losses against Liechtenstein, 0-4 and 3-0. For the European Championship of 2008 there was a victory in Belarus after ten defeats, the team also defended well against the Netherlands with two minute lost games (twice 1-0). In recent years there have been victories in Switzerland (2010 World Cup, 1-2 out), Albania (2012 Euro), Northern Ireland (2014 World Cup) and Macedonia (2016 Euro). In the qualifying series for the 2018 World Cup, Luxembourg managed to cause a stunt by keeping superpower France at home 0-0. After the Netherlands could only beat the team in the second half, Dutch coach Danny Blind stated that this is Luxembourg's best of all time. Low point was an 8-0 defeat to Sweden.
