Leeds United Football Club is an English professional football club based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. The club was founded in 1919 after the liquidation of Leeds City FC and plays its matches at Elland Road. They play in the Premier League, the top division of the English football system. Leeds United promoted from the Championship at the end of the 2019/20 season.
Leeds United have won the English championship three times in their history. In addition, the club won the FA Cup once, the League Cup once, the Charity Shield twice and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup twice. In 1975 Leeds lost to Bayern Munich in the final of the European Cup I. Most of the trophies Leeds United have won date back to the 1960s and 1970s, when the club was led by success coach Don Revie.
The club played continuously at the highest level from 1990 to 2004 and was the last champion of the Football League First Division in 1992, when the club was led by Howard Wilkinson. After relegation to the second tier in 2004, financial problems followed and the association was sold to English businessman Ken Bates in 2007. This resulted in a ten point deduction, which meant that Leeds were relegated to the third tier, League One for the first time in its history. In 2010, the club was promoted back to the Championship under the leadership of Simon Grayson. Leeds United has been led by Marcelo Bielsa since June 2018. In the 2019/20 season, Leeds United became champions, which meant that they were promoted back to the Premier League after sixteen seasons.
