The team has existed since 2000, as the successor to Casino, which in turn was the successor to Chazal. The team competed in the continental circuits in 2005, but was promoted to UCI ProTour in 2006. In 2005, the team was also allowed to participate in various, mainly French, ProTour competitions. In 2005, for example, it was the only team to receive a wild card for the Tour de France.

In the 2007 season, the team placed fourth in the ProTour standings for teams. In 2008, AG2R-La Mondiale attracted several new riders, such as Alexandru Pliușchin, who won the Tour of Flanders for U23 in 2007. The Slovenian Tadej Valjavec and the Russian Vladimir Jefimkin also signed a contract with the team. Since 2008, the team has been riding through the peloton under the name AG2R-La Mondiale. Christophe Moreau, the former "French hope" for a final victory in the Tour de France, left for Agritubel and Samuel Dumoulin went to Cofidis and Simon Gerrans left for Crédit Agricole. In 2009, AG2R rider Rinaldo Nocentini was allowed to put on the yellow jersey in the Tour.

The manager of the team is Vincent Lavenu, who is assisted by the sports directors Julien Jurdie, Laurent Biondi, Gilles Mas and Artūras Kasputis. Riders who rode for the team in the past include Jaan Kirsipuu, Laurent Brochard, Francisco Mancebo and the crashed riders Lauri Aus from Estonia and Andrej Kivilev from Kazakhstan.
