In the 2015/16 season, Ajax played in the Eredivisie. Ajax also participated this season in the KNVB Cup tournaments and the preliminary round of the Champions League thanks to its second place in the 2014/15 season.

In the Champions League, however, Ajax was eliminated in the preliminary rounds by Rapid Wien, meaning they took part in the UEFA Europa League. Ajax qualified for the Europa League by beating Jablonec in two games. In the group stage of the Europa League, Ajax finished in third place behind Molde FK and Fenerbahçe, meaning Ajax was no longer active in Europe after the winter break.

In the KNVB Cup, Ajax was paired with arch-rival Feyenoord after a 2–0 victory over De Graafschap. In De Kuip, Ajax lost 1-0 due to an own goal by Joël Veltman deep in injury time.

In the Eredivisie, Ajax competed with PSV for the championship until the last match day. Both teams had 81 points after 33 rounds, but Ajax had a better goal difference of 6 goals compared to PSV. On the last match day, Ajax did not get further than a 1–1 draw against De Graafschap. As a result, PSV, which won 3–1 at PEC Zwolle, managed to extend the national title.
