René Orlando Houseman (July 19, 1953 – March 22, 2018), nicknamed Loco, was an Argentine footballer who played as a right winger. At the start of his career, Houseman was considered the successor to legendary winger Omar Corbatta, and is still regarded by many sports journalists as one of the best Argentine wingers ever. An extremely skilled player, Houseman was characterized by his excellent dribbling ability, speed and mischief in the field.
The 1978 FIFA World Cup final was the 11th edition of the football match played as part of the FIFA World Cup. The match took place on June 25, 1978 between Argentina and the Netherlands. The final was played at the Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti in Buenos Aires.
June 25, 1978, Estadio Monumental, also known as River Plate Stadium, with approximately 75,000 mostly Argentinian spectators. Referee: Sergio Gonella (Italy). The match started with a delay after Argentina arrived late on the field and subsequently protested to the referee about the bandage on René van de Kerkhof's wrist. The Netherlands then threatened to walk off the field, after which the referee agreed to a slightly softer bandage as a compromise. The tone was set: it became a tough match, which meant that Gonella often had to whistle for fouls.
Initially, the Netherlands dominated, but over time Argentina became stronger. Daniel Passarella fired four shots in the first half, but none hit the mark. For the Netherlands, a header by Johnny Rep just missed the target and shots by the same Johnny Rep and Rob Rensenbrink were saved by the Argentinian goalkeeper, Ubaldo Fillol. In the 38th minute, Argentinian star Mario Kempes bypassed the Dutch defense and fired the ball behind goalkeeper Jan Jongbloed: 1-0 for Argentina. Just before half time, Rep was able to take another shot from five meters, but Fillo once again prevented a Dutch goal.
After the break, the Netherlands continued, but despite the urge to attack, Argentina was able to decide the match on the counter-attack; However, Jongbloed prevented the 2-0 from Kempes' foot. The Dutch offensive continued and the score was leveled in the 82nd minute. Substitute Dick Nanninga, who had replaced Johnny Rep, headed René van de Kerkhof's cross from the right into the Argentinian goal. In the last minute of regular playing time, a free kick from Dutch captain Ruud Krol landed at left striker Rensenbrink. From a difficult angle he shot the ball against the Argentinian post; the score therefore remained 1-1.
In extra time, both teams were tired, but the Argentinians appeared to have the longest staying power. It was Kempes who scored again, in the 105th minute. In the second half of extra time, Daniel Bertoni secured the Argentine victory after a pass from match winner Kempes.
