Galatasaray is a football club from Istanbul, Turkey.
The club colors are yellow-red. Galatasaray's stadium has been the Türk Telekom Stadyumu (formerly: Türk Telekom Arena) since early 2011 and is located in the Seyrantepe district of Istanbul. After the arrival of Galatasaray, the stadium's location was renamed 'Aslantepe', which literally means Lion's Hill. Galatasaray has been the record holder in Turkey with 22 championships since the introduction of professional football in 1959. The club also managed to win the national cup of Turkey 18 times. Galatasaray is also record holder in Turkey with this. The club's greatest achievement was winning the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in the 1999/00 season. The club wrote history by being the first - and so far only - Turkish club to win a European top prize. Galatasaray has the most supporters in Turkey, partly due to the successes in Europe. The club has many nicknames, such as "Aslanlar" (The Lions), "Cim Bom Bom", "Avrupa Fatihi" (Conquerors/Conquerors of Europe) and "Sarı-Kırmızılılar" (Yellow-Roden). The team is also sometimes referred to as "Gala" outside of Turkey, mainly by English speakers.
Galatasaray was founded in 1905 and is one of the three major top clubs from Turkey. The club is an omni-sports association, in addition to football, the club also has sections for basketball, volleyball, swimming, rowing, water polo and athletics. The club is listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchanges.
Galatasaray also has several rivals, of which fellow townsman Fenerbahçe is the largest. The matches between the two clubs are known as one of the biggest derbies in the world. The matches between the two townspeople are also called "Intercontinental Derby". This is due to the fact that Galatasaray is located on the European side of Istanbul while Fenerbahçe has its home base on the Asian side of Istanbul.
