The club was founded in a basement in Tågaborg in Helsingborg and was called Enighet during his youth. However, with the joining of the Swedish Sports Federation in 1925, the name was changed to Råå IF. In 1928 the association built its own football field, Råå Idrottsplats, which still stands and is used by the club.
Råå IF had its heyday in the 1940s and 1950s. In 1948 they won the Swedish Cup by beating BK Kenty 6-0 in the final, and in 1950 they took the step up in the Allsvenskan after beating Örgryte IS. Already in its first season, the club won the big silver and consistently drew large crowds; for example, there were 23,604 spectators against Malmö FF in Olympia - an arena which, however, was not considered a real home base in the fishing community, as it is located in Helsingborg. After the following 1951/52 season the club was relegated to Division II and has never played in the top level since.
During its heyday, Råå was led by Albin Dahl and Hungarian demon trainer Kalman Konrad, who was among others pre-World War II. was manager of major European teams such as Bayern Munich, FC Zurich and Slavia Prague, but during the war the turmoil took refuge in Sweden.
Dahl, on the other hand, was previously a coaching icon at Elsinore in the Danish top league, leading Di Röe to all-Swedish champions. That he later also took Råå, where Holger Danske - the symbol of Helsingør's football fans - is buried according to local tradition (on the moors of Råå under the funerary monument Fem høje sten, from which the Högasten district takes its name) to cup champion and second place in the Allsvenskan, his status in regional Scanian-Danish football history hardly deteriorated.
After being stable in Division 2 and 3 during the 1960s and 1970s, the 1980s and 1990s proved to contain wide variations in sports performance. The bottom was reached when the league played in division 7 during the 1996 season. In the 2009 season, the association plays in division 4 Skåne västra. In the seasons 2012 to 2014, the association played in division 3, 2015 in division 4 Skåne västra.
In 2012, HIF legend Henrik Larsson played in Råå's light blue jersey.
