Louis van Gaal added Memphis Depay, Anthony Martial and Bastian Schweinsteiger to his selection in his second season. The total investment under his training thus amounted to 300 million euros. Martial was the most successful of all purchases. He would close the season as the team's top shooter. Depay remained below expectations and was labeled a flop by the English media because of its expensive transfer price.

Van Gaal failed to capture the league title with Manchester United. In the UEFA Champions League, he was eliminated in the group stage. Afterwards, his team in the 1/8 final of the UEFA Europa League was swept by rival Liverpool. The Dutch coach and his team also regularly received criticism that Manchester United played unattractive and boring football. Only one team in the top 10 of the Premier League scored fewer goals than Manchester United. This made Van Gaal's position untenable. Although he eventually won the FA Cup by winning Crystal Palace 2–1 in the cup final, the board ended the collaboration after the season.
