Toulouse FC is a football club from the French city of Toulouse. The club was founded in 1970 and has nothing to do with the eponymous Toulouse, which was active from 1937 to 1967 and played in the highest division for 19 years.
US Toulouse was founded in 1970, three years after the demise of TFC. The players and the place in the first division were sold to Red Star Paris and as a result the big city in the south of France had no club at a higher level for three years. The club played in the second division in the 1970s and changed its name to Toulouse FC in 1977. In 1982 the club was promoted to the highest division. In the second season, the club finished fifth. After the club finished fourth in 1986, the club was allowed to participate in the UEFA Cup. In the first round, SSC Napoli and Diego Maradona were knocked out of the tournament, but in the second round Spartak Moscow was too strong. The following season, the club finished third and again reached the second round of the UEFA Cup, beating Greek Panionios in the first round but Bayer Leverkusen beating the club in the second round. The following seasons things went a little less with the club and in 1994 a relegation followed.
After three seasons the club was able to return and relegated again in 1999. The club had become a real lift team and was promoted and relegated again. In 2001, the club moved from the first to the third division, but then promoted twice in a row. After a 16th place in 2004, Toulouse finished in 13th place in the 2004/05 season. In the 2006/07 season, Toulouse finished in third place and qualified for the (third) qualifying round of the Champions League for the first time. In 2016, the club escaped relegation on the last day of play by winning 3-2 against Angers. In 2019/20 the season was ended prematurely due to the corona crisis, with ten games to go, Toulouse was already 10 points behind Amiens SC with only 13 points and a relegation would have been inevitable anyway.
It had to wait until the 2021/22 season to reclaim the lost place. The team became champion on the penultimate match day and will play at the highest level from the 2022/23 season.
