Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama is a Brazilian football club from Rio de Janeiro. The club was founded on August 20, 1898 by Portuguese immigrants. CR Vasco da Gama is named after the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. Home stadium is the Estádio São Januário, which has 24,584 seats. Sometimes the club plays in the larger Maracanã, especially city derbies. CR Vasco da Gama's biggest rival is city rivals CR Flamengo. The match between the two clubs is known as the Clássico dos Milhões. The derby at Fluminense is called the Clássico dos Gigantes. In the past, the club also had a fierce rivalry with America, this match was the Clássico da Paz; however, this has lost importance as America is no longer a top club.
Although CR Vasco da Gama is mainly known as a football club, the club is also active in other sports such as rowing (the club was even founded as a rowing club) and basketball. NBA basketball player Nenê comes from CR Vasco da Gama.
In 2008 the club was relegated for the first time.
