Manchester United FC became champions for the first time since 1967 in the 1992/93 season. It was the first season in the newly founded Premier League. Manager Alex Ferguson's side battled Aston Villa and Norwich City for the title all season, only to reach the top of the standings for the first time in January 1993, after losing their first two games. The big turning point for Manchester United came in November 1992, when the club snatched French striker Eric Cantona from Leeds United. He became an instant title holder, displacing Scottish striker Brian McClair into midfield. Manchester United eventually became champions by ten points. At the end of the season, Ferguson was voted "Manager of the Year". 19-year-old midfielder Ryan Giggs was named "PFA Young Player of the Year" for the second year in a row.
