Sydney FC is an Australian football club from Sydney. The club was founded in 2004 to represent the city of Sydney in Australia's revamped professional league, the A-League. Sydney FC's home stadium is Aussie Stadium (formerly called Sydney Football Stadium).
Since the A-League didn't start until the end of 2005, the Australian league had no champion in 2005. To determine the entrant for that year's OFC Club Championship, the A-League clubs had to play a qualifying tournament. Sydney FC won this tournament and was allowed to go to Tahiti to represent Australia at the OFC Club Championship. In the end, the club also won this tournament by beating AS Magenta Nouméa from New Caledonia 2-0 in the final.
As the winner of the OFC Club Championship, Sydney FC took part in the Club World Cup in December 2005. In the quarterfinals, the club lost 1-0 to Deportivo Saprissa from Costa Rica. The match for fifth place was won: Sydney FC defeated Egypt's Al-Ahly 2-1 by goals from Dwight Yorke and David Carney.
On March 5, 2006, Sydney FC became the first winner of the A-League. The "Grand Final" won 1-0 against Central Coast Mariners.
In 2007, Sydney FC along with Adelaide United became the first Australian participant in the AFC Champions League following Australia's switch from the Oceania Football Association OFC to the Asian Football Association AFC on 1 January 2007.
