St. Johnstone is a Scottish football club based in Perth in Perth and Kinross.
The club first played in the highest division in 1924. In 1971 the club finished third behind Celtic and Aberdeen FC. The 3rd place allowed the club to participate in the UEFA Cup where the German giant Hamburger SV was eliminated in the first round. In the 2nd round Vasas SC Budapest had to believe it, in the 3rd round NK Zeljeznicar Sarajevo was a size too big.
The club was relegated in 1973 and had to wait 8 years for a return for one season, then several relegations followed in a row and it looked like the club was about to come to an end.
Geoff Brown became chairman and turned things around, the club was able to play in 1st again a few years later. But the club relegated again and returned to first in 1997. In the 1998/99 season, the club finished 3rd and won the League Cup and was semi-finalist in the Scottish Cup. The 3rd place allowed the club to participate again in the UEFA Cup and lost in the 2nd round to AS Monaco.
In 2002 the club dropped to 2nd division and in 2009 promoted back to the highest level.
