In 1914 the club played in a league for the first time, a year later football in most parts of Europe was shut down by the First World War, after the war football was resumed. In 1926, the club colors of red and white were adopted in accordance with Varese's colours. In the Masnago district, the stadium became Stadio del Littorio. In 1950 the name of the stadium was changed to Stadio Franco Ossola, in tribute to Franco Ossola who had transferred from Varese to AC Torino and died in the Superga plane crash in 1949.
In 1964, the club was promoted to Serie A after two successive promotions. In the first season, the club finished eleventh and then relegated. In Serie B, Varese became vice champion behind Sampdoria Genoa and was promoted back. On their return, the club tied for seventh with Torino. Also this time, the club relegated in the second season. In Serie B, Varese became champions by one point over US Foggia and Catania. The third stay in Serie A was no different from the two previous ones, after a ninth place in 1971 the club became last in 1972. Now it took two seasons before Varese returned to Serie A.
