The FIFA World Cup Soccer 2010 was the 19th edition of an international soccer match between the national men's teams of countries affiliated with FIFA. The event took place in the period from June 11 to July 11, 2010 in South Africa. It was the first edition that was organized on the African continent.
South Africa was chosen over Morocco and Egypt as a host country in an entirely African selection process. Through an extensive qualification process and the automatic qualification of the host country, 32 countries remained for the final tournament, which was played in ten stadiums spread across South Africa. The qualified countries were divided in December 2009 into 8 groups of four teams. The numbers 1 and 2 of each group went through to the final rounds, which were played according to a knockout system.
The final of the world championship was played on July 11, in Soccer City in Johannesburg, between the Netherlands and Spain. After extension, Spain won 0-1 through a goal from Andrés Iniesta; the country became world champion for the first time in its history. After 1974 and 1978, the Netherlands lost the final of the football world cup for the third time in its history.
