Gretna FC was a Scottish football club based in Gretna.
The club was founded in 1946 but despite being a Scottish club it joined the English league and played in the Carlisle and District League until 1982 when it entered the newly formed Northern League.
In the 1990s, it became the first Scottish club since Rangers FC in 1887 to enter the FA Cup. However, recognizing that the future lay in Scottish football, the club applied to join the Football League in 1993 and 1999.
With the third application in 2002, the club had more luck, Airdrieonians FC had gone bankrupt and a place had become available. After 3 seasons, the club has been promoted twice in a row and will play in the Scottish First Division for the first time in 2006/07. On 29 April 2007, the club secured a spot in the football elite by taking a 3-2 win over Ross County in the Scottish First Division on the final day.
In the 2005/06 season, the final of the Scottish Cup was reached and the club became the first team from the 3rd division to reach the final since the division was founded in 1975. The final lost to Hearts after extra time and a penalty series. Because Hearts was allowed to enter the Champions League, Gretna already played European football in the UEFA Cup in 2006/07.
The success of the club can be explained by the fact that multimillionaire and club owner Brooks Mileson financially supports the association. The club pays the highest wages outside the Premier League.
The club will have a new stadium, the old one with only 2,200 seats (while not even 3,000 residents live in Gretna), but 6,000 seats are required to play in the Scottish Premier League.
In 2008 things went financially and sportingly wrong for Gretna. Due to Mileson's illness, no more financial resources came in, so that the club threatened to go bankrupt. As a result of financial mismanagement, the club received 10 penalty points and could no longer avoid relegation. Thanks to the intervention of the Scottish federation, which advanced money for broadcasting rights, Gretna was still able to finish the competition. The Scottish Football Association would move Gretna back to the Scottish Third Division, but after the last remaining buyer pulled out on June 2, the club went into liquidation after 62 years. The vacant place in the Scottish Third Division was then filled by local rival Annan Athletic. A newly founded football club Gretna FC 2008 was admitted to the East of Scotland League on 11 July 2008. On August 8, 2008, Gretna FC was officially declared bankrupt.
