Oxford United is a football club from the English university city of Oxford, which was founded in 1893 under the name Headington United (The suffix United was added one year after its foundation, before that it was simply known as Headington). The old Manor Ground stadium stood in Headington in the east of the city until 2001.
Oxford United played in the Football League Two, England's fourth league and the Football League's third league, until 2016. This league is the lowest league of professional football in England. In the 2005/2006 season, the club was temporarily relegated from League Two. From that moment on, Oxford United played in the Blue Square Premier, England's highest amateur level. In the first season in this league, Oxford United seemed to be promoted, but they were no longer involved in the play-offs. The Kassam Stadium in which Oxford United plays can seat 12,573 spectators.
The manager at the moment is Chris Wilder. The most successful manager in Oxford United's history is Jim Smith. He ensured that the club was promoted twice. Oxford therefore decided to re-hire Smith after relegation to the Blue Square Premier, but he could not get Oxford back to the old level. Another well-known trainer is Maurice Evans. He won the League Cup with Oxford.
After more than two years as chairman and with an almost bankrupt club, Nick Merry has left to make way for Kelvin Thomas, who also had a past at the club.
A number of well-known (former) footballers of Oxford United are Dean Saunders, who later also played for Liverpool, Aston Villa and Galatasaray. And John Aldridge, who also played for Liverpool and later for Real Sociedad from Spain. Aldridge holds a club record, scoring the most league goals with a total of 82 goals.
Two other well-known players who are still active are David Connolly and Dean Whitehead. In the 2015/16 season, the club secured promotion to Football League One by finishing second in League Two, 13 points behind champions Northampton Town.
