The FIFA World Cup, also known as the World Cup or the World Cup, but usually simply called the World Cup, is an international football competition contested by the national teams of the members of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the global governing body of sport. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 due to World War II.
The tournament consists of two parts, the qualifying phase and the final phase (officially called the World Cup Finals). The qualifying phase, currently taking place in the three years prior to the final, is used to determine which teams qualify for the final. The current format of the final includes 32 teams competing for the title, at locations within the host country (or countries) over a period of approximately one month. The World Cup Final is the most watched sporting event in the world, with an estimated 715.1 million people watching the 2006 tournament final.
The first time Denmark participated in the tournament was for the 1958 edition in Sweden. However, all four lost their qualifying matches to England and the Republic of Ireland.
They first qualified in 1986, where they won all three of their group stage games, including a 2-0 against defending champions West Germany, but were eliminated by Spain in the next round. Since then, the Danish national team has regularly qualified for the FIFA World Cup Final and made its fifth appearance in Russia 2018. Their best performance was in 1998, where they reached the quarterfinals.
