The English national football team represents England and not the entire United Kingdom in international football competitions such as the World Cup and the European Championship.

Each of the four Home Nations (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) has its own football association, its own league and its own national team. England is by far the most successful of the four.

In 1966, England became world champion in its own country. It won the semifinals of a major international tournament four times (European Championship 1968, 1990 European Championship, 1996 European Championship and 2018 European Championship).
