The Eredivisie has eighteen clubs. The competition usually starts in the course of August and usually ends in May, with a winter break being held in January. In football seasons after which a European Championship or Football World Cup is held, the competition season starts and ends one week earlier. The order in which the position on the ranking is determined depends on successively: the number of match points, the number of loss points, the goal balance and the number of goals scored. If two (or more) teams are tied at the end of the season, they end up right on the rankings. If a championship, European football placement, play-off places or direct relegation is at stake, then the mutual results count and if that is also equal, then a decision game will follow.
