The Primera División (also called La Liga Santander because of sponsorship rights) is the highest Spanish football competition. The twenty clubs play a complete competition to determine who can call themselves national champions of Spain. The bottom three are relegated at the end of the season, and are replaced by the numbers 1, 2 and a team to be determined by the play-offs of the Segunda División A. A total of 62 teams have ever participated in the Primera División, of which 9 are the won the national title. Based on these coefficients, the numbers 1 to 4 qualify directly for the UEFA Champions League and the numbers 5 and 6 qualify for the UEFA Europa League.
