The Bundesliga is the highest division in German professional football. It was introduced by a decision of the German Football Association on July 28, 1962 in Dortmund - from the 1963/64 season.
In the Bundesliga, eighteen clubs compete against each other in home and away matches. The champion automatically participates in the UEFA Champions League, the highest attainable football tournament in Europe. The two lowest-ranking clubs are automatically relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, the second highest football division in Germany since 1974. The third-to-last club plays relegation matches against the number three of the 2. Bundesliga.
The Bundesliga was initially only the football competition of the former West Germany, but from 1991/92 - after the German reunification with East Germany and the western part - it became the main competition of the new Germany.
The most successful club is Bayern Munich with 30 Bundesliga titles, also current national champions. After Bayern Munich, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund are the most successful clubs with both five league titles (note: the league championships prior to the introduction of the Bundesliga are not included in this count).
