Cerezo Osaka was founded in 1957 as Yanmar Diesel FC, the football team of Yanmar, a Japanese engine manufacturer. It was one of the most successful clubs in Japanese professional football until the 1970s, but when professional football was introduced in those years, the club went less well. In the early 90s, the club was relegated from the then top division (Japan Football League) and was therefore not included in the plans of the J-League.

In 1993, professionalization was carried out from Yanmar in the club. The club was founded on December 9 of that year as Osaka Football Club, but soon changed its name to today's Cerezo Osaka. Cerezo is the Spanish word for cherry flower. The cherry flower is depicted in the arms of the city of Osaka. The club colors are associated with this color.

Cerezo Osaka was not very successful in the J-League, but it turned out to be a cup fighter in the Emperor's Cup, including three finals that were all lost. In 2005, however, it was up to the last match days for the title of the J-League. It was therefore surprising when Cerezo Osaka relegated as the penultimate in the J1 a year later. Since 2007 it has therefore been released for the second time in the J2. It also relegated earlier in 2001, when the club returned to the highest level a year later.
