Brøndby IF is a Danish football club from Brøndby, in the Hovedstaden Region. The club was founded in 1964. The club plays its home games at the Brøndby Stadium.
The club was founded on December 3, 1964 as a result of a merger between two small clubs, Brøndbyvester Idrætsforening (from February 1, 1909) and Brøndbyøster Idrætsforening (from October 10, 1928).
Since the merger, the club has grown from a small club to one of Denmark's top clubs. In 1981 they became champions of the 2.Division and since then Brøndby has played at the highest level in Denmark and is the second most successful club in the country, after FC Copenhagen. This upward trajectory started with the appointment of Per Bjerregaard as chairman. He appointed Finn Laudrup (the father of Michael and Brian) as player-trainer and the club found its way up.
In 1985 Brøndby won his first championship. In the following years, various titles were won.
In 1986, the club was the second in the world, after Tottenham Hotspur, to be listed on the stock exchange. In the early 1990s, the club was close to going bankrupt, but Brøndby overcame the financial problems. However, the sporting achievements did not materialize for some time.
