AZ played in the 2009/10 season in the Eredivisie and the tournaments for the KNVB Cup and the UEFA Champions League. AZ also played as a national champion in the Johan Cruijff Scale. AZ won this match by winning the cup winner SC Heerenveen (1-5). AZ started the league on August 2 with a 3-2 defeat against Heracles Almelo, but still managed to finish in 5th, meaning that AZ is also guaranteed European football next season. AZ will then have to secure a place in the main tournament via the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
AZ was eliminated by Feyenoord in the KNVB Cup in the eighth final.
The Alkmaarders made their debut in the Champions League on 16 September. They had qualified for the championship in the 2008/09 season. In this she did not get beyond the group stage, partly due to the famous goal of Standard Liège keeper Sinan Bolat in the last minute of the game Standard - AZ (1-1).
It was an eventful season for AZ. The main sponsor DSB Bank and its parent company DSB Beheer, of which AZ N.V. was a part, definitively went bankrupt on 19 October. As a result, Dirk Scheringa had to leave the field as chairman for many years and AZ started a period of uncertainty. In retrospect, it turned out that AZ even balanced on the brink of collapse when a solution for the club did not arrive for a long time and its liquidity was at stake. AZ was forced to sell Ari and Sébastien Pocognoli during the winter break to deal with the acute money problems. As a result, AZ even ended up (temporarily) in category 1, the danger zone, of the license commission of the KNVB. On June 1, when the shares were transferred to the club for one euro (thanks to a group of regional investors), a rescue plan was launched for AZ that the club had to get healthy within three years so that AZ could stand on its own two feet again. As a result, the continued existence of AZ was assured and AZ could face the future with a new structure and new impetus.
