In the 2013/2014 season, AZ played in the Eredivisie. The season opened with the match for the 2013 Johan Cruijff Shield, in which AZ, as cup winners of the 2012/2013 season, competed against national champion AFC Ajax. In August, AZ qualified for the group stage of the Europa League through the play-off round. On November 28, AZ qualified for the next round of the Europa League. This allowed AZ to winter in Europe. Ultimately, AZ failed in the quarter-finals of the Europa League in which SL Benfica was too strong in two games.
In the KNVB Cup, AZ failed to beat Ajax in the semi-finals this year, meaning Ajax qualified for the final. In the Eredivisie, AZ reached 8th place, which was enough to participate in the play-offs for a Europa League ticket. However, after SC Heerenveen had first been defeated, FC Groningen turned out to be too strong for AZ in the 57th and 58th official match of the season. As a result, AZ will not play European football in the 2014/2015 season for the second time in eleven years.
On September 29, 2013, Gert-Jan Verbeek was dismissed as trainer. On October 20, 2014, Dick Advocaat was back on the bench as AZ's coach for the first time. Among the winter transfers, the most notable names were Maarten Martens, who left for PAOK Saloniki, and Simon Poulsen, who returned to AZ.
