Serie C has been the third football division in Italy since 2017. Until 1979, it was known as the Serie C. Until 2014, it was known as the Lega Italiana Calcio Professionistico, Lega Pro for short.
The Serie C was started in 1935 and split in 1978 into the Serie C1 (third level) and the Serie C2. In 2008 the Lega Italiana Calcio Professionistico was formed which was the umbrella organization for the Lega Pro Prima Divisione (third division) and the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione (fourth division). Games were usually played in different geographically divided gironi (pools).
In 2014, the Lega Pro Prima Divisione and the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione were again merged into one division, the Lega Pro. In 2017, the name was again changed to Serie C. This is played in three groups with 20 teams. The three winners will play a play-off for two promotion places. The last number of each group is relegated. They are promoted to Serie B and relegated to Serie D.
