Aarhus GF (AGF for short) is a Danish sports club from Aarhus, the second largest city in the country.
The sports club was founded on September 26, 1880 as a gymnastics club, the football department was founded in 1902. Six years later, the club became champion of the JBU (the Jutland Football Association), then the highest attainable title there was in mainland Denmark. Only from 1913 was played for the national title of Denmark. In the 1920s, AGF played the final for the title three times, but lost it each time. The team was led by former international Harald Hansen from 1925 to 1927.
In 1955 the first national title was won and AGF extended it in 1956 and 1957. Also in 1955, the first 'Denmark Cup' that had started that year was won, eight more cup victories would follow and AGF is the record holder in Denmark. The fourth national title followed in 1960. AGF had to let go of its role in the sixties and in the seventies it became a lift team between the first and second division. In 1978 the club was one of the clubs that played in the professional league of Denmark. In 1986 the fifth, and for the time being the last, national title was won. Until 2006, AGF was the only club that always played in the professional league, in 2006 AGF relegated. After one season, the club was able to return. In the 2009/10 season, the club finished in penultimate place and relegated again to the second division. The following season, however, it became champion, which means that AGF again plays in the top division. After three seasons, they were again relegated to the 1. Division. Aarhus was again promoted to the Danish Superliga in the 2014/15 season.
