AaB is a professional football team based in Aalborg. The club is represented in the Danish Superliga and has won four Danish football championships and three Danish cup trophies. Most recently, the team won the double in 2014.
AaB was founded on May 13, 1885 by English engineers who were building the Jutland rail system, and the early years were concentrated on the game of cricket. It was initially called Aalborg Cricketklub (Aalborg Cricket Club), but the club's name was changed to Aalborg Boldklub (Aalborg Ball Club) in 1899. Football was adopted on an amateur basis in 1902 and has been the main sport ever since, as the name was changed to the current Aalborg Boldspilklub af 1885 (Aalborg ballgameclub from 1885) in 1906.
In 1995, AaB became the first Danish team to participate in the UEFA Champions League group stage when they got a seat as Dynamo Kyiv was kicked out of the tournament after one game for an attempted match-fixing. AaB qualified for the Champions League 2008-2009 and with two appearances is the Danish club that took part in the tournament the most after FC Copenhagen.
